CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the City Schools Committee took place last evening, when Messrs. J. Blades (chairman), Farrell, Crowe, Burns, Adams, Fairs, and Sherson were present. Appointments.—The Board of Education intimated that they proposed to appoint Mr. E. J. Walters second assistant teacher at the Napier-street School, and asked the committee if they had any representation to make. It was decided to approve of the appointment. The Board also forwarded ! a notification that Miss Dewar had resigned her position in the Wellesley-street School, and that- they proposed to appoint Miss A. ! M. Devon to fill the vacancy. This appointment was also approved, the Chairman remarking that the committee was losing a good teacher in Miss Dewar. The Chairman pointed out that under the Education Act resignations of 'teachers should be sent to the committees. The attention of the Board, he stated, had been called to the provision, and it had sent circulars to all teachers, bub here was the same thing cropping up again. On the motion of the Chairman it was decided to again call the attention of the Board to the matter. Chapel-street School.—The Board of Education submitted the names of Messrs. G. Thwaites (Dl), and W. H. Worsley (1)2), for the committee to chose either for the position of head-master of the Chapelstreet School. The Chairman stated that another name—that of Mr. F. Warren—had also been sent in, bub Mr. Warren had afterwards withdrawn his application. As this had only left two, he (the Chairman) had asked the secretary of the Board for the names of all the seventeen applicants. These had been furnished; but, in doing so, the secretary asked the committee to deal with the applications of the two gentlemen whose names had been previously submitted. Mr. Farrell moved, "That consideration of the application* be held over till this day fortnight, and that in the meantime the Board be asked for the applications and testimonials of all the candidates." He said he did not move this motion out of any want of respect for Mr. Thwaites, whom he believed to bo really too good for the school, but because ho thought it would be best in the interests of the school if they had the names of all the applicants before them. The motion was seconded by Mr. Burns, and, after some discussion, was carried. Education Board Elections. — The Committee unanimously resolved to vote for the election of Mr. James McGowan to the vacancy on the Education Board caused by the retirement of Mr. J. L. Kelly. Nelson-street School.—The Chairman read the explanation of the head master of the Nelson-street School relative to the results of the recent examinations. Mem bers generally expressed satisfaction with the explanation. Mr. Farrell blamed the system, and said the head master had been too honest to manipulate the Primer and Standard I classes so as to balanco his per centage of passes. It was decided to inform the Board that the committee had no recommendation to make.
