THE ANGLO-AUSTRALIAN BANK, LIMITED.
Melbourne, October 12. A few days ago John Hogan forwarded a complaint to the Attorney-General relative to the issue of false balance-sheets by the directors of the Ancrlo Australian Bank, Limited, in liquidation, and expressing his willingness to swear an information against the directors. Mr. Shiels has replied to the letter to the effect that before the case could bo launched against any directors whose names appear in the balance-sheet, it would be necessary to be prepared with legal evidence showing inter alia the publication, or the concurrence in the publication, of the balance-sheet by them, that the balancesheet was false in material particulars, and evidence available to show this must be set out, also evidence of knowledge on the part of the accused persons that such terms were false. Mr. THogan replied that the balancesheet was false in its pretended " reserves and unndivided profits," and false in the alleged paid-up capital," representing ■% total sum of £270,000. The directors and management proved a guilty knowledge by withdrawing misstatements in subsequent balance-sheets. The case excites a good deal of interest, because action in this indi cates whether action will be taken in regard to other institutions.
