SOME EXCELLENT SKIN EMOLLIENTS.
Very few people are aware of the variety of excellent skin emollients at hand in their flower and kitchen gardens. Cucumber juice stirred into cold cream is a delightfully cooling remedy, and so is the juice of the strawberry used in the same way, with a few drops of pure spirits of wine. Carrots are supposed to be beneficial for the complexion, if taken internally day after day in some form or another, and of the good effects of a raw potato cut in half and rubbed lightly over the face before going to bed, we have, doubtless, most of us heard. And whilst on this subject let me inform those who have them and who do not know it that Borne addition to their income might be made by preparing scents and toilette vinegars, or even cosmetics, with the products of their gardens. Lavender water has been attempted, and very successfully, by many an enterprising spinster. Nothing is more simple to make. All you have to do is to add the essential oil of the flower with a little musk to some spirits of wine, regulating the amounc according to the strength preferred. The essence of lavender added to good cognac makes another pleasant toilet water, of which a teaspoonful thrown into a hand basin will be found sufficient. A piece of camphor the size of a large pea melted in two teaspoonfuls of eau de Cologne is an improvement to every toilet water. It is becoming a custom now in some houses for the hostess, in giving a dinner party, to sprinkle the dessert table with some sweet essence, which might be. prepared in the above manner.
