The Southland Times say that sheepstealing has reached a pitch in Zew Zealand that requires the remedy of special legislation. According to statistics published in the Cincinnati Price Current, there had been a great decrease in pork-packing, comparing quantities for 1891-2 with those of 1890-L For the whole year, ending March 1, the number of hogs packed is put at 14,457,614, yielding 1,907,903,0001b of green meat, and 497,045,0001b of lard ; whereas in 1890-1 the number of hogs was reckoned at 17,713,134, the meat furnished at 2,371,376,0001b, and the lard at 618,732,0001b. The decreases are 3,255,520 hogs, or 463,473,0001b of meat, and 139,687,0001b of lard. Notwithstanding these heavy decreases, however, the number of hogs packed last year was greater than in any season on record excepting 1890-1.
