THE FEDERAL COUNCIL. Melbourne, May 21. In an interview which the Premier ot South Australia had with Mr. Shiels, Premier of Victoria, the latter strongly urged South Australia to again join the Federal Council, and Dr. Playford promised to submit the matter to the Council.
RETRENCHMENT IN VICTORIA. Melbourne, May 21. The Retrenchment Committee recommends that the Telegraph and Postoffice Departments shall be reorganised, on a plan calculated to save £70,000 per annum. The Committee suggests an amalgamation of the Registrars of Mines, Births and Deaths, and Electoral Departments with the Post-office.
SYDNEY ASSOCIATED WHEEL RACES. Sydney, May 21. At the Associated Wheel Races, today, at the cricket ground, J. Williams, of Rendigo, with 220 yds, was returned winner of the two-mile race, while J. Warwick, of England, who was at scratch, and W. S. McCombe, of Victoria, with 140 yds, tilled the places. Williams won by 20 yards, in sm. 25 2-sth s.
