DEATH OF THE HON. JOHN MARTIN, M.L.C.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Tuesday. The Hon. John Martin, M.L.C., an old and respected settler, died at noon to-day, the immediate cause of death being pneumonia. The deceased, who was aged 71 last October, was seized with a severe cold on Thursday last, and was unable to rally. He leaves a grown-up family.
Oar Wellington correspondent telegraphs: — "The Hon. John Martin, M.L.C., whose death is announced came to the colony in the ship Lady Nugent in 1841. Two of his brothers survive him in Otago ; three died there. He leaves four married daughters. Mr. Martin passed through all the vicissitudes of colonial life creditably. He was esteemed a pood friend, a good citizen, and a man of blameless life. He was a native of the North of Ireland, but came to the colony from Meghara, near Dublin. He died one of the wealthiest men in the colony. His eldest son is Dr. Martin, of this city.-"
