Directly the fltg {oil, shillelagh was taken to the front, ami the race may shortly be described by saying that he maintained thai: position from start to finish. Zareha declined to negotiate the jump near the poolers. Shillelagh led past the stand. Whalebone being si-cond. and l-'lintstono third, the same order being kept to the spar jump, where Whtlebone baulked, and was not got over until some time was lost, thus losing too much ground to be able to recover his lost position, and after lieing ■ ersevereil with for some time retired. Auckland fell at the made furze jump past the stand, and, though quickly remounted, soon after also retired from the contest. In the meantime, shillelagh, who was fencing well, had several lengths lead, ind on the run home cleared the furze jump out of Winks' Held a few lengths in advance or Commotio >, who had not be, fencing too well, losing ground at every jump. Still he made a big bid for victory, and pressed the black gelling pretty closely at the ttiiMi, both horses being under the whip. I'lintstone, who finished third, was a dozen lengths away. Time, 7m. 95., which in much faster than any time hitherto recorded for the race. There were 301 investors, and the dividend £5 9s.
