AQUATIC SPORTS
Yesterday afternoon, at the Calliope Dock, a very pleasant fete, took place—the children of the Devonport Public School holding their first annual swimming sports. A suitable programme had been drawn up, and in all the events there were large fields, while the competitors contested each race with all the keenness of youth Mr. A. F. Beuge, the headmaster, directed the sports, being ably assisted by Messrs. Day and Darrow, while several scores of parents and friends formed an interested audience. The children were all clothed in regulation amateur costume, and many displayed great proficiency in the useful arts of swimming and diving. The following were the results of the races: — Maiden Race, bays: H. Frankham, 1; Le Sueur, 2; Burgess, 3. Boys, under 12: Webbe, 1; Frank ham, 2; Warbrick, 3. Girls' Race, 50yds: O. Chamberlain, 1; B. Sullivan, 2; M. Smith, 3. Neat Header, girls : M. Webb. 1 ;0 Chamberlain, 2. Neat Header, boys : Warbriek. 1; Jenkinson and McLeoci, equal, 2; Feltham, 3. School Championship, 75yds : Phillips, 1; Mays, 2; Spraggon, 3. Plunge: Web be, 1; Wooller, 2 Breaststroke Race: Markhatn, 1; Peacock, 2; Wooller, 3. 36yds Dash: Phillips, 1 ; Spraguon, 2. Plunge: Markham, 1; Feltham, 2.150 yds Handicap: Spraggon, scratch,l ; Parkinson,43., 2! P. Bailey,scratch, 3. At the conclusion of the races the prizes, consisting of handsome books, inkstands, etc., were presented to the winners by Mrs. Oliver Mays, who was heartily cheered at the close of the proceedings, while Mr. | Benge was congratulated upon the success of the gala.
