The German loans have been subscribed threefold. The Sydney Government are establishing labour bureaux. The Right Hon. Sir James Caird, the eminent agricultural authority, ia dead, aged 76. The Standard asserts that the fall in the colonies' stocks is due to the failures in Melbourne and Brisbane. The Waterloo Cup is creating some little interest, and the nomination of Colonel North is supported at 4 to 2. The Finance Committee of the United States Senate has reported adversely on all the Free Silver Coinage Bills. The number of deaths reported in London for the week from influenza is 370. The death rate of those attacked by the epidemic is 31 per 1000. The Daily Chronicle, in attempting to reassure investors, points out that ib is impossible to effect rapid retrenchment in tht} Australian colonies. The statement by the World that the Queen has assented to the burial of the remains of the Duke of Clarence at Sandringham is officially denied. It is understood that the stoppage of work at the Junction mine, Broken Hill, is only temporary, pending certain financial arrangements being made.
