A wife not IS years old obtained a separation order at Chester owing bo her husband's brutality. At the first meeting in January of the Port Albert Mutual Improvement Society, being the half-yearly meeting for business, the several reports were given in, and were considered wholly satisfactory, the treasurer, Frank L. Hartnell, showing a balance on the right side, and the secretary, Cbas. Walker, reporting some forty members on the roll. The average attendance was also shown to be good. The result of the election of officers showed as follows : —F. Marnier, president-; P. L. Becroft, vice-president; C. Judd, secretary; Miss Amy Gubb, assistant ecretary ; C. HefFord, treasurer. This settlement has been well served in the matter of communication for some months past. We have two little steamers running to within one and a-half miles of the village, each weekly. To the Kaipara Steam Service Company belongs the honour of inaugurating this regular trade; and the Northern River Steam Navigation Company, not to be behind, also put on a boat. The convenience of this tidal service is very great, and is deservedly ■ appreciated. It may not be generally known that the agents of the Oaprey have donated £2 lis to the funds of the North Kaipara Agricultural Society as prize-money at the show. —Paparoa Correspondent.
