Afc the New Plymouth Police Court yesterday the case of Metcalfe, on remand, charged ou a warrant from Wellington with failing to support his wife and Child, came on for hearing. Application was made by the complainant's solicitor for a remand to Wellington. The magistrate, said he would hear some evidence first. The complainant's solicitor objected. The magistrate decided to hear what Metcalfe had to say in defence. Metcalfe stated he went to reside at Ngatimaru in February last year. He had a farm of 457 acres, and there wuk a house on it. His wife came to live there, but after stopping three weeks left him without cause. lie asked her to return several times, but she would not. _He got a letter in October, threatening judicial separation. His wife would find a homo if she came back. He said he had been nearly ruined bv her. Complainant' 1 ?! solicitor said Mrs. Metcalfe was nearly starving in Wellington. The magistrate dismissed the information, and released Mebcalfe on the grounds that the complainant had not succeeded in proving the charge of failing to support. Recently some miscreant entered the grounds at Lord Winborne's Dorset scat, and destroyed nearly thirty pieces of valuable statuary.
