Pregg Association.—Electric Telegraph.—Copyright London, January 25. The result of the Rossendale election has depressed the Unionists. The Times points out that Mr. Maden, the successful candidate, was afraid to justify the Home Rule scheme put forward in 1886, and only supported a few extensions of the scope of local bodies, always subject to the Imperial Parliament London, January 26. The Standard admits that the result of the Rossendale election was a signal disappointment, and says it would be folly to disguise the severity of the defeat.
