NEW PLYMOUTH LABOUR BOARD.

% 'i; I A special meeting of the above Board was i held at their office, Brougham-street, on Thursday, the 27th of August. Present: Messrs. T. King (chairman), P. P. Corkill, Shuttleworth, G. W. G aue, L. Sarten, J. B. Conuett, and Kyngdon. also Mr. Samuel, the Board's solicitor. Correspondence was read from Mr. Samuel re Mr. Oldfield's lease. /Resolved, That as the Board hay not' lost anything by Mr. Oldfield, that he be informed that the Board would accept a surrender of his lease" of the sea beach free from rent and royalties, if he will pay cost of same. From the National Bank of New Zealand; E. M. Smith, M.H.R., asking the amount of the £d in the £ rate. The secretary has furnished it, viz., £5208 10s 6d. Mr. Webster, agent for the Northern Steamship Company, under date of 19th August, stating that while shipping 78 cattle yesterday, belonging to Mr. Milne, per s.s, Gnirloch, owing to the battens having been removed from the floor of the race, cattle had not the usual foothold., One animal got down and was killed. -It was removed to the slaughter yard in order to lessen the loss upon whom it may fall. I fully expect the shipper will claim from your Board the amount of loss sustained. I notified Captain Holford that the battens would require to be replaced before Friday, or it would be unsafe to ship cattle from the race. Ho promised to attend to it. The chairman explained that the battens had been taken up to clean out the race by scraping. Mr. Corkill considered that as there was a hose, and plenty of water, it should have been done in that way; there was no occasion to remove the battens. All the members agreed with Air. Corkill. Mr. Gane said it was a piece of gross negligence on the part of someone, for who gave orders to remove the battens had neglected his duty to replace ; . them ; but as there was no claim made the matter dropped, except it was understood the Board was liable. From the harbourmaster, notifying that the new boat had . been delivered at the wharf on the 15th all right, and was tested'by the s.s. Taka- . puna on the 18th, giving satisfaction. He V also recommended that the old boat be out in two, and made into dingles for the dredge, to save the only small useful boat from bad usage with the dredge. No action was taken. From Mr. John Hooker re an • ' allowance for fencing between him and the natives, he being in occupation of the harbour reserve. The amount asked was £0. Mr. Gane said this matter had been brought up some time ago and dealt with, when the claim was £4, and he, was under the im- ? pression that it had been paid. The minutes were referred to authorising the chairman to deal with it, but lie had not done so. Resolved, on the motion of Mr. Gane, seconded by Mr. Kyngdon, " That the over- 'y seer, Mr. Gilbanks, be requested to report fully on the question of Mr. Hooker by next ; meeting." Mr. Shutt 1 worth proposed, Mr. Sarten seconded, " That the notice to strike . :• a rate be confirmed." Mr. Gane was asked if he was going to oppose it. lie said ho .■ did not oppose measures for the sake of opposition, only when he considered it right to do so; but after reading the debate in the ~■ >;i House last night on the harbour question lie would, under the circumstances, vote for it. Carried.
