An effort is to be made to form a company in Cbristchurch to manufacture starch from potatoes. The low price of potatoes lias brought this about. On September 8 there was launched, at tlie\Nortli .Shore, the latest addition to the fine licet of coasting steamers trading under the Northern S.S. Co.'s well known blue and white . flux. The new vessel was the s.s. Ohinemuri, a screw steamer of about 70 tons register, which is destined for the Thames River trade. On Saturday, Sept. 5, at 8.30 o'clock there was launched from, the Hobson-street embankment a smart little steamer intended for the Thames - River-Auckland trade, which had been constructed by Mr. Charles Bailey to the order of . Messrs. Brown, Geddes, and Syms. The Paeroa is a screw steamer of . about 60 tons.
