FIRES.
A vihe broke out at Dunedin early on Friday morning,', the 2Sth August, on the premises of Romison, confectioner, Georgestreet. Shortly after it was discovered a loud explosion, which did great damage to the buildings, took placo. Part of the premises wero occupied by families named Metcalfe and Morgan, who escaped with their, clothes. Romison's > stock and machinery were insured for £130 in the New Zealand. None of the others were insured. The explosion is believed to be due to the heat melting the gas pipes. Some idea of its force may bo gathered from the fact that it almost levelled the back wall with the ground, smashed all the windows of the premises, cracking those buildings and others on tho side of the right-of-way. The building was owned by F/Murran, and insured in the Union Office for £700. It was reinsured in the Standard for £100. Romison estimates his loss at £150 above the insurance. Mrs. Metcalfe loses £200, and Mrs. Morgan nearly £200. , , All the outbuildings on the homestead of F. C. Goodrich, near ' Feathers ton, were burnt down on August 15. There was no insurance, and tho damage is estimated at over £200. Mr. Foster's uninsured barn and contents was burned down at the .Junction, Paeroa, on September 4. The damage is £60.
