On" August 10, Mr. Hugh Shorthand, solicitor, brought .a charge of criminal libel against the young woman who brought a charge of libel against him the other week. Mr. Shortland conducted his own case, and Mr. 11. Campbell appeared for the defend ant. After hearing the statement of the prosecutor, and the arguments of counsel, the information was dismissed by the magistrates, Dr. Giles and Major Gascoyne, R.M.'s.

A woman named Ellen Howard was brought, before the Police Court on Sept. 7, charged with stealing a cash-box containing jewellery to the value of £25, promissory notes representing over £1000, a bank deposit receipt for £300, and 150 scrip in a mining company. According to tiio evidence she had taken the bpx from a pawnshop to which she knew the back ontrance, and had given it to "the father of her baby," retaining, however, the jewellery, which she afterwards pawned. The accused was committed, for trial at the next criminal sittings of the Supreme Court. Joseph Dicks, lately landlord of the Waltham Arms Hotel, Sydenham, was arrested on the express train to Oamaru on Wednesday, the 2nd September, on a warrant charging him with endeavouring to abscond from his'' creditors. He had been adjudicated a bankrupt that day at Christchurch, and a warrant was immediately issued for his arrest, which was accomplished by Detective O'Brien and Sergeant O'Grady. Dicks had about £1000 on him, and also a quantity of valuable jewellery. Mr. Murdoch McKenzie, who was at one time overseer for the Master ton Road Board, has been arrested on a charge: of forging the names of several contractors to vouchers of the Board. The alleged offences • have been going on • for some months, and were detected by the Government Auditor, who'instituted proceedings. The accused was charged with the offences and remanded. In the "'Wellington Supreme Court on Sept. 2, Thomas Blackwell, charged with abducting his niece from her parents, residing at Grey town, was acquitted.
