IMPORTS. Per schooner Lily, from Napier: 978 sacks potatoes. Per s.s. Richmond, from the Islands : 308 sacks coffee, 1953 cases oranges, 40 packages tobacco, 12,000 cocoanuts, 74 tins desiccated cocoanut, 1000 orange plants, 3 casks limejuice, 133 sacks copra, 47 packages sundries. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Co.'s cargo steamer Pakeha, is expected to leave Wellington for Waitara on the 11th instant, and should arrive here early on the 10th. From Auckland she will proceed to Giaborne and Tiniaru to load frozen meat, and make Lytel ton her final port, whence she will leave for London on the 27th inst. The ship Piako is still in the stream awaiting a change of wind to sail for the South. , Last evening the s.s. Chelmsford arrived from Opotiki with a full general cargo and passengers. During yesterday the Union S.S. Co.'s Poherua was busily discharging her raw sugar at tho Chelsea Wharf. She is to be towed down to-day, and floated into the Auckland dock for cleaning and overhaul. About 9 o'clock yesterday morning the schooner Lily, Captain Bloom, readied port from Napier with a cargo of potatoes. I'he master reports that she left the Hawke's Bay port on the Ist instant, and rounded thi East Cape on the otli. Across the Bay of Plenty she experienced strong N.E. winds and heavy sea, which prevailed till iking port. The Lily will, oil the commotion of her discharge, load here for Dunelm. Early yesterday the Union S.S. Co.'s Talune returned to harbour from the Bay of Islands. She is timed to leave for the •South and Melbourne to-day. Tho barque Northern Star, just in from Fiji, is to be berthed at the Sugar Works Wharf to-day to discharge her raw material for the local refinery. A slight collision between two coasters, the Spitfire and the Ghost, occurred off the Railway Wharf yesterday, in which the latter had her jibboom carried away. The Union S.S. Co.'s steamer Maori is due hero very shortly from Fiji, where she has been for some time engaged in tho interinsular trade. She will bring a cargo of sugar. The Auckland portion of the R.M.s. Ruapehu's cargo, which arrived at Wellington yesterday, is to come forward by the Union S.S. Co.'s Australia, next Sunday, and her passengers will probably arrive by the s.s. Pakapuna, at the Alanukau, on Saturday. The schooner Marmiou ha 3 been fixed to load timber at Tairua for Duuedin. At tho Customs yesterday, the barque Grasinero was cleared for Sydney. She is to take a timber loading, and has already shipped /X).OUO feet, and will take in the balance at Whangaroa. A Wellington telegram received yesterday says:—'The Marine Department have for some time had before them the case of an officer who is anxious to pass his examination as a master. The question at issue is what constitutes foreign-going services, whether it means any kind of service under foreigngoing articles, or whether, as contended by the Marine Department, it necessitates actual c. service in foreign waters. Several deputa- , ■ tions have waited on Mr. McKcnzie, Minis- ' ter of Marine, and to-day he gave his final answer, declining to interfere, as the Crown solicitor supported the department in their contention. It is stated that the decision of the Customs lin London, Sydney, and Melbourne, in the opposite of this.

THE S.S. RICHMOND. Last evening Messrs. Donald and Edenborough's Island packet Richmond arrived rather unexpectedly from Rarotonga and Tahiti, having made the round trip in the fastest time on record, and reaching port a collide of days ahead of her due date. The Richmond as usual brought a large freighting of mixed general merchandise, and also hud a food number of passengers. The purser, lr. 0. Latohmorc, supplies the following report of the trip : — The Richmond left Auckland on Friday evening, the 7th August, at 10 p.m., and called at Opua next morning, and took in 2"/) tons coal, leaving the same evening at 5 o'clock for the Islands. She reached Tonga on Thursday at fi p.m., on the 13th August, and discharged her cargo next day, and left for Samoa at 3 p.m., arriving at Apia on Monday morning at daylight; she had very ciuick despatch, and continued her voyage the same evening at 6 o'clock. She called ut Rarotonga on the 21st, discharged freight; and left the same day for Papeete, reaching that port on the 21th at C a.m.; she landed her live stock and cargo, and commenced loading return freight, leaving on her return on the 27th at 2 p.m.; and again called at Rarotonga on the 30th, and finished her inward loading with coffee, oranges, etc., finally leaving for Auckland on the Hist at I p.m. Tho Richmond experienced very fine weather all round, and the passengers had a most enjoyable trip. The Northern Co. a.s. Gairloch, from New Plymouth,' arrived at' 1.50 p.m. yesterday with a mixed general cargo and passengers as above.

The Union Co.'a s.s. Mahinaptia, Captain Thomas Spedding, from the South, arrived at 1.30 p.m. yesterday. She left Wellington at 8 p.m. on the 6th inat., arrived at Nelson at 9 a.m. ou the 7th hist. Left there for New Plymouth at 9 p.m. same day, arriving at 2 p.m. on the Bth inst. Left Now Plymouth at 11 p.m., crossed the Manuk.au bar ! at 11.40 a.m. on the 9th inst., and arrived at | wharf at 1.25 p.m. Experienced fresh N.E. winds with fine weather throughout. The Union Co.'s s.s. Herald completed discharging her cargo of coke and coal at 6 o clock last night. She leaves for Greymouth this .morning early. BY TELEGRAPH. BRISBANE. September 9.—Sailed : Barque Strauss, for New Zealand. ARRIVAL OP R.M.S. RUAPEHU. Wkxjjnciton, September 9.—The R.M.s. Ruapehu, from London via tho Cape and Ilobart, arrived at 2.30 a.m. Her dates arc Plymouth, 2.5 th July; Tenerifte, 80th ; the Capo, August loth. She left Hobart at 10 p.m. on the 4th September. After leaving the Cope she experienced heavy gales both from the S.E. and N.W. with high seas. From Ilobart thero was fine weather. The health of the passengers lias been good throughout. She has 84 passengers for New Zealand ports, 217 bags mail, and 20 boxes parcel post. She brings 1,300 tons cargo, half of which is for Wellington. The passengers for Auckland are :Second saloon : Mrs. and Miss Kilson, Miss Patorson, Messrs. Husk. Glecd, and Kilson. Steerage: Mrs , Miss, and Muster Dimmock, Messrs. Dinunock, Houghton, Lunduguest, Wellington, Saunders, Wymann, Boyes, Whinray.
