BOROUGH ELECTIONS.

It will be seen by advertisement elsewhere that Mr. John Patterson has retired from the contest for Ponsouby Ward, and that Mr. John Swales has been declared duly elected. We understand that the statement which has been given currency to that Councillor W. li. Smith intends to retire from the contest for City North Ward, is incorrect. This announcement will give satisfaction to a large number of the ratepayers, who have watched his career with satisfaction as a city representative in the City Council for the past three years. During that period he has shown himself to be attentive to his duties and a zealous guardian of the interests of the ratepayers of City North. He has done this at considerable sacrifice of time, which could be ill spared from the management of an extensive business. We understand that as Mr. Smith has " no axe to grind," it is not his intention to personally solicit votes ; but while willing to serve his constituents as faithfully us heretofore, will leave the responsibility of the outcome of the contest with themselves. It is his intention to inform the ratepayers of his views by circular. The nominations for the vacancies in the Newton Borough Council, closed yesterday at noon, the following candidates having been proposed:—Surrey Ward, Mr. J. McMaster (proposed by Messrs. W. Adams and R. S Cox) ; Sussex Ward, Mr. John Webley (proposed by Messrs. S. J. Ambury and W. Martin); Richmond Ward, Mr. J. W. Porter (proposed by Messrs. R. Hellaby and R. T. Warnock). There being thus no opposition, each of the three gentlemen named was declared duly elected by the Returning Officer, Mr. John Currie. The following candidates have been nominated for the Newmarket Borough Council Messrp. R. R. Holmes, J. Lumpkin, J. M. Laxon, J. Stone. A poll will take place at the Newmarket Hall on Thursday, the 10th instant, for the return of three Councillors.

The only gentlemen nominated yesterday to till the three ordinary vacancies in the Birkenhead Borough Council were Messrs. R. J. Hardy, Benjamin T. Hawkins, and Albert F. Porter. as the number nominated did not exceed the number of ' vacancies,: the above were declared duly elected. Mr. Thomas Seaman acted as Returning Officer.
