GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE WON BY MAY BE. MR. DOUGLAS SCORES A WIN WITH JUPITER. Press Association.—Electric Telegraph..—CopyrigM. Melbourne, July 27. The second day's racing in connection with the V.R.C. Winter Meeting took place to-day at Flemington. The attendance was fair. The course was still in a very heavy state from the recent flood. The following was the result of The Grand National Steeplechase, a handicap sweepstakes of 20sovs each, with luOOsovs added. The owner of the second horse to receive SOOsovs, and the owner of the third 150sovs, out of the stakes. About three miles. Mr. W. T. Jones' gr g May Be, 6yrs, 10st 61b (R. Batty) 1 Busaco, list 51b (T. Corrigan) 2 Coral, lOst 121b (Bull) _♦-... 3 Nineteen horses started, Jupiter being the only New Zealander. Betting: 8 to 1 against Busaco and Sir Wilfred, 12 to. 1 May Be, Fearless 11., Marmion, and Whisperer, 16 to 1 Coral. Schoolboy Was the first to move on the fall of the flag, and he led the field over the first fence, when he gave way to Whisperer, who was at the head of affairs when the second obstacle was negotiated. Here Jupiter fell, and brought down Sir Wilfred. At the back of the course May Be held command, but at the abattoirs "were approached Whisperer was again m the load, while Fearless had run into second place, followed by May Be s Busaco, and Marmion. Entering the straight Marmion rushed to the front, and headed the field as they swept past the stand, with May Be second, after whom came Busaco, Whisperer, Fearless, and Coral. The second division being separated by a long gap. Nearing the abattoirs on the second round, Marmion had four lengths lead, his nearest attendants being Coral, Bnsaco, May Be, Whisperer, and Fearless in that order. Coral ran up to Marmion at the scraping ahede, and the pair raced on neck and neck with May Be and Busaco lying handy. Marmion was the first over the last fence, i but coming to the straight May Be and ' Busaco singled out from the others, but the struggle did not, however, last lone, as May ; Be showed too much pace for his opponent, and won by two lengths.
