AUCKLAND WINTER MEETING.
The fears expressed on Tuesday evening as to wet •weather being experienced for . the A.R.C. Winter Meeting, fixed for yesterday, 1 proved correct, for a soaking rain fell throughout the night, and though matters took up somewhat towards eleven a.m. yesterday, the stewards wisely decided to postpone the races : till Saturday. ; This decision gave a good deal of satisfaction, for, in addition to the (lay being generally regarded as a most unsuitable oi.e for : holding a race meeting, the racecourse was in -a " very heavy state irom the rain that had fallen. From an advertisement in another column it will be seen that the Railway Department have made extended train arrangements for Saturday. - Chief , amongst these is that the usual 4.15 p.m. train, Auckland to Mercer, will be delayed till 4.45, ; picking up passengers at the racecourse platform at 5.10,' and will run right through' to Hamilton West. This will, no doubt, nave the effect of drawing a large number of Waikato visitors to the meeting that would otherwise not : be present. It will be observed that the Northern Steamship Company have also made arrangements for meeting the convenience of Thames visitors by postponing the s.s. Argyle's departure from noon till midnight on Saturday. ; J' :^
: / TO THE SPOUTING EDITOR. Sin,— Being a visitor, and noticing the easy manner in which hurdle* were knocked down at Takapuna (mind, sir, not broken), might I suggest through vour columns the advisability of having the hurdles '{listened at the top as well as the peg driven in the ground. It is manifestly unfair to the owner of a good jumper to see a hurdle race reduced to a match on the flat. The worthy secretary of the A.H..C. might well give this matter his attention, and like* wise see that all the jumps are according and up to the stipulated height-, distance, etc. Apologising for trespassing, I am, etc 1 , ' AOEM. >
