ROTORUA NEWS.
[BY TELEGRAPH.— OWN CORIIKSPONDEKT.] ' Rotorua, Friday. Taupo te Iwitere, who is committed for conspiracy, and is out on bail, took his departure on Wednesday last en route tor Auckland, taking with him a horse belonging to Mr. Malfroy, J. P., which ho took out of the Pukeroa paddock without permission, and rode it to Oxford, and sent a note back to some other natires to inform Mr. Malfroy that his horse was safe at Oxford, and which ho will no doubt be able to procure by paying the necessary stabling fee. Our worthy J. P. is naturally much annoyed, and is not likely to treat the simple • minded Maori with greater leniency in future when brought before him. . /Mr. Withy, ex-M.H.R., after a stay here of about a week, left, this morning for Tauranga. ■ .A man named John Roper lias been brought from Galatea suffering from cancer, and has been placed in the meantime in a building near the hospital, receiving every attention, but he' will probably be removed to the Costley Home shortly. Roper has been engaged prospecting for gold in the neighbourhood of.Galatea for several years. The witnesses in the conspiracy case left to-day en route for Auckland. - Our uenial postmaster, Mr, Dausey, being one of them, his duties here will be attended to by Mr. A. ■K. Kelly, who arrived for that purpose from Tauranga last night. Whilst a buggy was at Whakarewarewa on Wednesday, waiting to bring sonic visitors on to here, the driver left the horses unattended for a short time opposite Taylor's hotel, when they bolted off to Rotorua, leaving passengers and driver behind. Fortunately there was very little traffic on the streets at the time so they had a clear course until arriving opposite Crosby's hotel, after nearly a three mile spin, when they ran into a team of bullocks that were in the way, but without sustaining the slightest injury. Here the horses and buggy were taken in charge by Mr. Marchesscau.
Mr. D. Griffiths has taken a lease of the Koutu farm from Mrs. R. Graham, and will enter into possession of it next week. Mr. W. McKee, tho present occupier, will proceed to Paengaroa, where ho has secured a section of Government land. 1 The stewards of the Rotorua Jockey Club are about to call for tenders to clear and plough about twenty acres of their new course. They intend to spend about £70 this winter in improving it. Instructions are issued for lectin? the first portion of the Turangarore Road, in the vicinity of Tongariro, to the natives owning the land, so there is now a chance of this road being opened for next tourist season. This will make a difference to the traffic towards Napier via Tarawera, and no doubt the Hawke's Bay County Council will see their error in not hurrying on their new road, so as to miss the 50 odd crossings of the Esk, besides Kawakawa Hill, where passengers have to alight, to allow the empty coach to be dragged up the hill. /
