Dunemn, Thursday, A deputation from the University Council waited on the city members to lay before them a statement of affairs of the School of Mines. Tho chancellor; Dr. Smart, gave a history of the School arid the circumstances which had led successive Governments to vote £^00; annually, which the? Hon. Mr. Seddon now seemed inclined to withdraw. I Mr. J. Allen uls'o traced the history of the School in ' the earlier , days*. The charge that the School was" not a success might have some :-;, foundation, but the numbers attending the lectures : had ' gone up to 49,46, and 50 for the; last (three: years. These -, figures , did not; include students attending chemistry, physics, mathematics,' and drawing. He read a list of 22 names of fthose who had attended the- School, and now held prominent positions in regard to mining, one being in the Sandhurst School of' Mines, another holding office in Tasmania, another head of the Kyneton School, Victoria, another at Broken Hill, while others were surveyors and engineers. Fifteen of the students last year had spent six months' of the year , in practical experience at the mines in tho colony to gain certificates. The .members'; intimated that they would be prepared to. urge the Minister to continue the grant and support it when placed on the estimates. . The undergraduates. afterwards interviewed the members to ask them to sup- I port a Bill similar' to that of last year, giving graduates representation on the Council./.... / ' " ,
