LOCAL OPTION POLL.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —I have been interested in the various ways the returning officers of the various licensing districts in and around the city have advertised the above. One advertises a poll "to determine whether or not the number of publichouses may or may not be increased another, "that publicans licenses and New Zealand wine licenses mas'- be increased." Our city officer, that " the number of publicans' licenses and New Zealand wine licenses may be increased." A suburban officer, " that the licenses may or may not be increased." I presume the schedule to the Licensing Act gives the exact form for the returning officers to copy ; why, then, do they not copy it ? We have had enough litigation over technicalities to cause the officers who have to supervise the administration of the Act to see to it that they do not five their own ideas of what the Act- means. 'he idea in the minds of the returning officers is, that the poll is to result in an increase of licenses. No one has advertised a poll in the formula that licenses may not be increased.— am, &c., Observer.
