VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

After a short gun-drill, the "A" Buttery were treated last night to a most instructive lecture by Sergeant-Major Bush, of the Permanent Artillery,'on gunnery and the manipulation of projectiles used by field artillery. The lecturer dealt with the best means for finding unknown ranges, and the latest methods adopted for striking moving objects. In response to a request- of Mr.JDuncan Ross, the athlete now in our city, the " A" Battery went through a series of sword exercises, at the conclusion of which Mr. Ross gave a display of sword drill as performed by the regulars. He complimented the company on their efficiency, and stated that they did their work in a manner which would be creditable to any body of men. A pair of singlesticks was then produced, and Mr. Ross and Captain Ueddes had an animated contest to the intense delight of the onlookers, who by no means expected to be favoured with such a treat. Both the combatants were heartily applauded at the conclusion. The Martini-Henry Rifle Club's monthly competition, arranged for Saturday next, is postponed, as there is no ammunition available. Saturday will therefore be an open day on the range at Mount Eden.
