CRICKET. [ GORDON V. ST. MARY'S. . ; The above match took place on Saturday. The St. Mary's captain not particularly wishing to toss, allowed the Gordon captain to use his own discretion, of which he soon availed himself by sending his men in to bat. H. B. Luskaud J. Ansenne took their respective places. Both started very carefully, and were playing very good cricket, when, at 20, the latter unfortunately hit his wicket for a well-played 12, got in his usual neat style. Williams filled the vacancy, and soon rattled up 23 in fairly good form being neatly caught by Moron. J? wke followed, and contented himself' by staying at the wickets while his partner, Lusk, was hitting them all over the liehl. The former was, eventually, bowled for three. Ryburn appeared, and played carefully for his 16, not out. The fun of the afternoon was, undoubtedly, H. B. Lusk's performance; he, evidently, had a charmed life, as he gave at least eight chances. Although his luck was in, he, however, gave the spectators a fine display of his hitting powers. He was at the wickets the whole afternoon for 116, not out, got by a mixture of cricket, good defence, and hard hitting, with plenty of luck. Gordon—lst Innings. 11. B. The pavilion, lately extensively enlarged and improved, had been most tastefully decorated by the lady members, and was bright with evergreens, Hags, and beautiful flowers. There was also a tent erected on the lawn, and set apart as a withdrawing j room for the ladies. Refreshments, consisting of tea and fruit of. various kinds, cakes, etc., were handed round by a numerous staff of club members on hospitality intent, and Hunter's band lent spirit to the proceedings by giving a selection of lively airs. Play commenced shortly after half-past two p.m., and in the ladies' doubles the invading members of the University Club, Miss Rigby and Miss Nicholson, were met by Miss Roberton and Miss Murray, but managed to pull oil the event for their club: 6—5, 6—2. The match arranged between the champion lady players, Miss Hitchins, of Hawke s Bay, and Miss Mowbray, of Auckland, is to come oil' on Saturday next, at 3 p.m., at the Parnell lawns.
