WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.
[BY telegraph, own correspondent.] Wellington, Monday.
MINISTERIAL MOVEMENTS.
The Hon. J. McKenzie, Minister of Lands, arrived in Wellington last night from the South. SIR OEOROE grey. The return of Sir George Grey to political life in this colony, taken in connection with the loss to the colony of the Hon. Mr. Reeves, has awakened a good deal of speculation. The Government certainly count on Sir G. Grey as a supporter. The opponents of the Government say that Sir G. Grey and the present Premier cannot work together, because both have somewhat rough and unpleasant reminiscences of each other. On the other hand it is said that Sir G. Grey will rather assume the role of "good shepherd" than raise the cry of " wolf." In any case he will be the Nestor of Parliament, "The old man eloquont," "the father of the colony," and its most venerable type of public man and statesman.
TICK MINISTER OF EDUCATION. The newspapers to-day intimate the probability that tho Hon. W. P. Reeves will resign his portfolio in consequence of the family bereavement, which throws upon him tho care and responsibility of the large business firm of which he becomes the head and representative. This may happen, but I rather doubt it. If the Hon. W. I'. Reeves should, through pressure of business, have to retire temporarily, it is said that his portfolio will be offered to Mr. Perceval, the member for Christchurch.
THE AGENCY-GKNERAL. It was supposed when the present party succeeded to power that Mr. Perceval was to have had a portfolio. I believe it was certainly intended to recognise his political claims in that way. Then came the story of his possible appointment to the office of Agent-General. This rumour still persists, : although Mr. Perceval has contradicted it. People who are supposed to be in the confidence of the Government believe it. Ido not.
