THE BOOTMAKERS' STRIKE.
Tiie weekly hands in the boot trade who had given the usual notice went out on Saturday in support of the strikers. . A batch of benchers and finishers leave to-day for the South. Some of the smartest of the operatives intend setting up in business for themselves, and there is also a scheme suggested for starting a co-operative boot factory. A meeting of* the Auckland Tailorts' Union will be held this evening to receive a deputation from the Boot Machinists' Union.
The Northern Boot and Shoe Company (Limited), notify in our advertising columns that they are willing to engage employes for all departments, work being given out in quantities, and no waiting. The hours are stated as 45 per week, which is better than the " eight hoars system," which has been regarded as the working man's millennium. Terms of employment are guaranteed. It would be hard for a co-operative factory to beat that programme.
