THE HUNTLY MINING CASE.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN* CORRESPONDENT.] Hontly, Thursday. The case the Mining Inspector v. McClellan and Kay, contractors, was resumed to-day. Mr. Hay appeared for the Crown ; the defendants appeared in person. Mr. W. J. Ralph gave evidence that he was agent for Ralph's Taupiri mine, and had let a contract for constructing a new dip to the defendants in August last, and that the mine was a coal mine under the Coal Mines Act 1886. Mr. Collins deposed to the state of the mine before the late accident, the dimensions of the timber used, and the manner in which it was secured. Mr. Tole, who was retained on behalf of Mr. Collins, and was waiting till this case came on, several times interrupted the Court to protect Mr. Collins, and finally he stated he would appear for the defendant-. Several sharp passages of arms took place between the legal gentlemen, and the proceedings are likely to be indefinitely prolonged. Mr. Collins was subjected to an exhaustive examination, which had not concluded when the telegraph office closed.
