THAMES NEWS.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Thursday. The Borough Council have decided that the Tararu Gardens are unsuitable as recreation grounds, and therefore will not purchase" them. A committee, however, has been appointed to inquire into the matter of obtaining a suitable site, with instructions to report within three months. The movement here for holding a regatta on St. Patrick's Day is meeting with much encouragement, and subscriptions are coming in pretty freely. A meeting of the general committee was held this evening at the Royal Hotel, when Mr. J as. McAndrew (Mayor) was elected president, and tho Hon. A. J. Cadman, M.H.R., Major Murray, Drs. Williams, Payne, and Scheidel, Captains Farquhar and McLeod, Messrs. J. Coutts (County Chairman), and A. K. Cooper were elected vice-presidents. The secretary was instructed to write to the Northern S.S. Company for the use of the Clansman as a flagship. Everything now points to the regatta being a great success, and it is thought that if the Clansman comes down as flagship a large number of Auckland visitors will take advantage of coming down by her.
