THAMES NEWS.

[by telegraph.—own correspondent.) Thames, Wednesday. At a meeting of the Harbour Board Mr. S. C. Gillespie, on behalf of the Kauri Timber Company, wrote offering the sum of £50 in payment of the Board's claim, amounting to £200, in order to avoid the expense of a recourse to law. The company protested against towed logs being classed as shipped. Mr. McDonnell moved, and Mr. Walton seconded, " That the letter be received." . Mr. Wood moved as an amendment, and Mr. Dunlop seconded, "That it be an instruction to the solicitor to reply to the effect that the Board is prepared to accept £100 in settlement, and the payment of all costs to date, failing which the suit will proceed." After considerable discussion the amendment was carried. At the Police Court to-day nine cases of non-compliance with the provisions of the Vaccination Act were called on for hearing but, on the application of the Registrar, the whole were adjourned for one month to allow the parties an opportunity of getting their children vaccinated. At a meeting of the County Council thirf evening eight tenders were opened for the maintenance of the county water race for a period of three years. They were as follows :—W. Laurie, £512 10s per annum ; A. Butler, £588 ; J. Creamer, £635; W. S. McCormick, £699 ; J. Law, £857 ; J.- McPike, £861 15s; R. N. Smith, £935 R. Coombes, £980. The tender of W. Laurie was accepted. The letting of the maintenance of the race by tender is expected to effect considerable saving, as the average cost for the same to the county for the lasb two or three years has been £1200. The Sylvia G.M.Co., being aware that the financial position of the County Council prevented that body from carrying out the necessary repairs to the Tararu Road, which leads up to the mine, made an offer to the County Council to lend them £250 for carrying out the work, the money to be repaid by the Council out of the first gold duty obtained from the company's return,. The offer was considered at the Council meeting to-night, and eventually accepted, it being pointed out they would get a Government subsidy of £ for £ on money expended.
