THE SUGGESTED RESUMPTION OP BORROWING.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—From your Wellington correspondence, it appears the Press there have thrown out a suggestion, which may be accepted as a, "pilot balloon," sent up to see which -way the wind blows. Although the subject of " borrowing or no borrowing " was not made so prominent a public question at the late election as its importance deserved, it is well known that there is a strong feeling against borrowing in the country districts, and very few, if any, of the candidates advocated mere loans. It is to be hoped that sufficient opposition to further borrowing still exists, and if so, it ought to speak out plainly, or else our newly elected rulers may go in for a merry time during their threo years term of office. The temptation is great; it is so pleasant to have plenty of money to spend, and especially easy got' money. I trust the country will speak .out straight and crush the proposal at once.— am, &c., F.
