MAYORAL ELECTIONS.

NEWMARKET. The election of a Mayor for the borough of Newmarket excited a great deal of interest yesterday, the two candidates, Mr. George Kent and Mr. F. G. Clayton, being well known residents, and as usual in small communities there was no small display of local feeling. The voting was, of course, on the principle of single voting, no cumulative voting being allowed in the election of a Mayor. Major Pirie presided as returning officer, and by the time the returns were prepared nt half-past six o'clock a large attendance trooped into the public hall to hear the result. A olose contest was anticipated, but few partisans expected that it would be so close a t it was found to be, when the returning officer announced the result George Kent ... 59 F. G. Clayton ... ... 57 Majority for Mr. Kenb ... 2 The announcement was received with cheers and applause, as the chairman declared Mr. Kent duly elected, and that he would take office on the 17th of December. Mr. Kent thanked the burgesses for returning him at the head of the poll. He had served them faithfully for a number of years as a councillor, and "had never shirked a duty, and they now showed, their appreciation of his services by electing him to the ollice of Mayor. His endeavour would be to serve them ns faithfully in the future as he had done in the past, and he could not do more. He did not seek this honour, but he was nominated for the office by the present Mayor of the borough, Mr. Morgan, and seconded by Mr. Heron, and lie could not decline to become a candidate. (Cheers.) Mr. Clayton said he thanked those 57 burgesses who had voted for him, and although ho was not returned at the head of the poll his duty would be to still keep in the Council, and do his best for them. Mr. Kent proposed a vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, which was duly accorded, and the gathering dispersed. DEVON PORT. In this borough, though there was no demonstrative excitement in regard to the contest for the Mayoralty between Messrs. E. W. Alison and 0. ; Mays, there was still a keen interest exhißitcd during the day, particularly during the mid-day and evening hours, when the majority of the votes were polled. Vehicles were in requisition to bring tardy electors to the polling-place, but the greatest good feeling prevailed between the partisans of both candidates. Mr. Alison was on the Shore frequently during the day, but business prevented Mr. Mays from being present.
