A CONSUL FOR RAROTONGA.

We understand that it is contemplated to appoint a consul at Rarotonga, who would occupy an influential position in advising those who administer the government of the group. A petition was some time ago sent to New Zealand signed by a number of leading people in Rarotonga, asking that a consul should be appointed who would maintain a connection between Rarotonga and this colony. The Imperial Government have consented to the arrangement, and a sum of £300 was placed on the Estimates to pay such an officer. In all probability an offer of the position will be made to Mr. F. J. Moss, who has an intimate acquaintance with the islands. He resided for some years in Fiji, and a short time back made a prolonged tour of the different groups. The Disqualification Act would seem to stand in the way, but probably this difficulty could bo got over in some way. It is said that a petition was received by the Government from Rarotonga, asking that Mr. A. Glover, who is married to a Rarotongan, should be appointed, but this request was not complied with.
