RAILWAY REFORM LEAGUE.

The following letter from the Chairman of the Select Committee appointed to consider and report on the petitions lately presented to the House of Representatives on the repeal of the Act of ISST, and for a trial being made of Vaile's Stage System, with the replies from Mr. Yaile and the Railway Reform League, have been handed to us for publication : —

House of Representatives, Wellington, July 31, 1800. Samuel Vaile, Ksq., Auckland. Sir, —I have the honour, by direction of the Railway Rates Committee, to ask you whether you have any further evidence to give other than that which you have alreadygiven before a Committee of the House in 1880, or that which is contained in your correspondence with the Railway Department and Commissioners '! If you have any further evidence will you be good enough to furnish the same in writing to this Committee at as early a date as possible.—l have, etc., Joseph G. Hakk.ne.ss, Chairman of the Railway Rates Committee.

This communication was received on Saturday evening, and was replied to by the following telegram : —

Joseph G. Harkness, Esq., Chairman Railway Rates Committee, Wellington. — I have handed your letter of 31st July to the Committee of. the Railway Reform League, and asked them to be good enough to deal with it.—Samuel Vaile.

Yesterday morning a meeting of the executive committee of the League was held, when the following resolution was adopted. Captain 7»\ C. Daldy, J.P., chairman, to whom the matter was referred, entirely approved of the course the committee agreed upon.

Resolved. That the executive committee of the Railway Reform League, having considered the request contained in the letter from the Chairman of the Railway Kates Committee of 31st July to Mr. Samuel Vaile, deems it advisable to record its unanimous opinion thereon as follows

1. That it is within its knowledge that Mr. Vaile has a considerable amount of additional evidence and information besides that he gave to the committee of the House of Representatives in 1886, which he has informed the committee he is prepared to give before the railway Rates Committee. The committee of the Railway Reform League, however, is not prepared to advise him to do so unless he is placed ;u the same position as that he held ■when examined by the Parliamentary Committee four years ago, namely, to have the opportunity to conduct the case in person for, and on behalf of the petitioners. 2. That justice could not be done to the case of the petitioners by a statement in writing of Mr. Vaile's evidence alone, as numerous questions must necessarily arise on such a statement which would require per«onal explanation.
