AN EXCISE HUNT FOR MISSING MALT.
[by telegraph.— own correspondent.] Rotorta, Monday. On Saturday afternoon an excise oiiicer named Jackman, accompanied by Constable Cavanagh, made a surprise visit to Rotorua. It appears that a large quantity of malt had been consigned to a firm in Tauranga, but nothing is known as to what lias become of it. Suspicion was aroused that the malt had been forwarded in this direction for illicit distillation purposes. Though a diligent search was made no trace of the missing malt could be found. The excise officer''and the constable started for Tauranga yesterday, and on the way have been making inquiries of the waggoners as to whether they have brought any malt this way, and also if certain individuals had been seen in the vicinity of the Oropi bush, where a search will be made, but up to the present nothing has been discovered. A cask, however, has been seized at one of the hotels for a supposed breach of the Stamp Duty Act.
