i . ■"* A special meeting of the Hobson County j Council was held in the Council Gdiee on Friday, 'July IS, at eleven a.m. Present: r Messrs. Bassctt, Dargaville, Harding and Smith. The business was to elect a chairj. man and consider the petition to the Government. The clerk took the chair. It was resolved, 011 the motion of Messrs. Dargaville and Harding, that Mr. 11. T.Smith be chairman and treasurer for the rest of the j year. The resignation of the former chair- , man, Mr. If. .1. C. Coiitls was not read, nor was it formally accepted, Mr. Ibrgavilleconsidering it unnecessary. It was understood to be in possession of the clerk. It may per--1 ii.ips be questioned whether it is legal to 1 elect a new chairman until the resignation of s the old one has been formally laid before the r Council and accepted. Mr. Sniit'h took his seat as chairman. Mr. Dargaville hoped his election would mark anew era in the Council, and that there will be less unpleasantness than in the past. Mr. .Matthews, who was to have , drawn up the petition to the Government re i J. Finlaysoivs case, was reported to be too ill to attend. Mr. Dargaville read a rough " draft of a petition to the Government which had been written by Mr. Matthews, asking for compensation for the losses the Council r had sustained in this action. It was decided , that the petition be adopted anil forwarded f to Mr. Moat, M. 11. and that Mr. R. r Thompson, M.H.R., be asked to assist. Mr. ! Dargaville brought up the question of petiv tioniug the Government for help for the \ West Coast branch of the Great North Road.
