SIR G. MAURICE O'RORKE AT ONEHUNGA.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—Sir Maurice, in his remarks at Onehunga last Saturday night, upon the action of Mr. Thomas Peacock and Mr. Thomas Thompson, M.H.R.'s, should have said more, and told bis hearers that the "springs" which he sought by means of his Bill to give exclusively to Onehunga, and without giving any compensation for them, were the property of and reserved for the County of Eden (including Onehunga). Some time ago, during my term of office, a meeting was held at the City Council Chambers (at which I presided), of the chairmen of the Road Boards in the County, the Mayors of the Boroughs, and representatives from Onehunga, and some of the city and suburban M.H.R's., at which a resolution was passed objecting to Sir Maurice's proposed Bill. The representatives from Onehunga supported the Bill, the remainder of those present opposed it, and the members for the city and suburbs were requested to oppose the Bill, which they successfully did. The Bill, in proposing to take "the Springs " from the County and give them to Onehunga, was contrary to the intention expressed in making them a county reserve. Had Messrs. Peacock and Thompson not taken the course m Parliament that they did, in protecting the interests of the County, they would in the opinion of that representative meeting, have failed in their duty, and suffered the perpetration of a wrong.—l am, etc., A. Devore, Ex-Mayor of Auckland. June 16, 1890.
