MR. ALLEN MAGUIRE AND THE WELLINGTON CORPORATION.
[by telegraph,—own correspondent.] Wellington, Saturday. The Post, this evening, urges upon the Corporation the re-consideration of Mr. Maguiro's claim. It sets out the whole of the facts. The value of the "extra "work done is stated to bo about £2000. The facts are that Mr. Maguire followed the engineer's specifications for the seawall with thorough accuracy ; but the engineer who made the plans (Mr. Loughrey) left the service of the Corporation during the progress of the work. The new engineering authority ordered the contractor to make a further excavation of the solid bottom of a depth of some nineteen or twenty feet below the water, and to fill it with masonry the whole length of the wall—4oo yards. As the matter may yet be capable of amicable settlement, I do not think I ought to refer to the discussion of the matter which is taking place here. There is, I believe, scarcely any dispute as to the facts or the excellent quality of the work. Tho whole matter turns upon tho construction to be put on tho terms of the contract, and the effect upon the contract itself of changing the engineer during the progress of the work.
