FORT OF ONEHUNGA.
DEPARTURES. . A Olenelg, s.s., Norbury, for Wanganui.—A. Barnes, agent.
The Northern Co.'s s.s. Qlcnelg sailed for Wang&nui, via New Plymouth, yesterday, at 11 o'clock, fairly patronised with freight and passengers. ACCIDENT TO S.S. GAIRLOCH.— FOR REPAIRS. At 6 o'clock yesterday morning the Northcrn Co.'s steamer Gairloeh came up the harbour slowly and anchored oft the wharf. A few minutes later it was learnt that an accident happened at S o'clock the night previous. The Gairloeh left Onehunga for W aitara, on Thursday, at noon, with cargo and several passengers, whose names appeared in yesterday's issue. When the vessel was abreast "of Woody Head, which is about 45 miles south of the Manukau, the chief engineer, who was on watch, became alarmed at. the port engine racing, and quickly shut off the steam, at the same time concluding that some part of the port propeller had carried away. When Captain Me Arthur became aware of the accident he elected to return to Manukau, ami shaped his course accordingly, steaming with one (the starboard) engine, and arriving in Onehunga at the time stated above. Her cargo was at once transhipped into the Glenelg, and the disabled vessel placed on the beach, when at low tide it was discovered that the outer portion of the port shaft, together with the propeller, had broken off outside the hull, and lost in deep water. The work of repairs was proceeded with during the day, and it may be expected that the vessel will again be ready for sea early next week.
