At eight o'clock last night the s.s. Wellington sailed for Whangarei with passengers and cargo. Late Colombo advices mention that H.M.s. Pigeon, a screw gunboat of the first-class, recently built at Pembroke, of 755 tons and 3200 p., arrived from Bombay on May 7. She belongs to the East Indian squadron, and is cruising. Her crew numbers 89 men, and she has six guns. Trincomalee would be her next port of call, but it was not stated when fhe proposed leaving Colombo. . Early yesterday morning .Messrs. Donald and Edenborough 3 smart schooner Torea returned from Ilarotonga after a smart trip of Hi days with a full freighting of 600 cases oranges, which are in splendid condition. Captain W. Donald reports that the down trio was also a good one, being accomplished in 14 days. The Torea sailed from Avarua for Auckland on the Ist inst. and had good easterly breezes throughout the passage. When the Torea left the Hervey Group, the s.s. Little Agnes was trading amongst the various islands there, collecting copra, cotton, etc., for this port. „ The outgoing mail steamer Mariposa is expected to arrive from Sydney to-morrow afternoon. Yesterday afternoon the B.n. Richmond went into the Auckland Dock for her periodical survey. She will have her repaired crank shaft replaced, and a new mainmast fitted. Her date of departure for the islands is now definitely fixed for the 22nd instant. The schooner Louie has gone to the Thames, to load up with timber there for Lyttelton. She will take about 76,000 feet of sawn. Yesterday afternoon the well-known coastal trader, the Queen, Ca.pt. T. Jones, arrived from Hokianga with a cargo of firewood, furniture, gurn, and the following passengers :Messrs. W. 11. Jackson, Spencer, Mrs. Jones, and Miss Cooper. She left Hokianga on the 6th instant, and called at Kawerua and Qhora. She had S.E. winds till passing Cape Brett on the 12th, and thence fresh E.ISI.E. breezes to arrival. The little schooner Orpheus, which has been lying in port for a couple of weeks, has been fixed by Messrs. C. F. James and Co. to proceed to Whangarei, and there load coal for Heleneville. She hauled alongside the Queen-street Wharf, and began taking in stores and ballast yesterday.

NEWCASTLE HARBOUR. Extensive improvements are being made in the harbour of Newcastle, which, when completed, will be much appreciated by the numerous shipmasters trading there. The local papier of a recent date states :—" The sand-pump dredge Juno, which has been engaged at the reclamation works at the dyke, is working in a manner which surpasses the most ardent expectations of those connected with her. She is now cutting a channel of £& feet deep in the inner harbour, the sand trom which is deposited through a long row oi pipes into about two-acre basins. There are now three . of these paddocks or basins piled in to a height of 12 feet, and brought up level with the dyke wharf. The work is progressing rapidly, and the dredge is now under the control of local men, Captain Blott, who came out to the colonies with the dredge having been ordered to the Cape of Good Hope to supervise the introduction of the system there. The construction of the additional ballast jetties at the Newcastle end of the dyke is being proceeded with rapidly. lions rows of piles have been driven in.

1 and hago joists connecting the piles in which the wood flooring of the wharf is beinjr firmly laid. It is expected that additional ballast berths for at least two vessels will be ready for use in a few months' time, a, want which has long been felt when number of vessels arrive in the harbour in ballast. Another great improvement, to this part of the harbour is being pushed forward. The long seam of rock which extends from the south end of the dyke in the direction of the timber wharf is fast being obliterated. A large pontoon, with seven powerful drills, has been engaged there for some months past, and bias, ting the rock by the aid of dynamite and electricity is daily being effected. This rook acts like a bar to the inner harbour, and at low water it would be anything but safe for vessels to cross. It is expected that the 2.1-feet deep channel will be completed as far as the engine-house by the end of the year, and all the swamp filled in level with the dyke wharf.
