WASHED OVERBOARD.
TWO BROTHERS DROWNED. [by teleghaph.— PßESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Friday. Captain R. E. Smith of the steamer Arawata, which arrived from Auckland this evening, reports that when off Capo Runaway, ab seven o'clock yesterday morning, ho spoke the fore-and-aft schooner Maud Graham, bound from Lyttolton to Auckland. The crew of the latter vessel lowered a boat and came on board the Arawata. They reported that on Sunday night, when the schooner was off Portland Island, running before a strong southerly gale, heavy seas broke on board, and swept the captain and the mato (brothers named Fitzgerald) overboard. Nothing more was seen of the two unfortunate officers, and it was too rough to lower a boat. The vessel had her wheel damaged, but temporary repairs bad been effected. In reply to Captain Smith, of the Arawata, who offered to give the Maud Graham's crew a raau to bake her to her destination, the crew said that they could manage all right. CIIRiSTOitCRCH, Friday. The late Captain Fitzgerald, of the Maud Graham, was a resident of Lyttelton, a good sailor, and much liked by his employers. He was only recently married. She was built in Auckland in 1876, but has been for some time owned by the Christchurch firm of Messrs. Cuff and Graham.]
