UP IN THE CLOUDS.

NARROW ESCAPE OF A BALLOONIST. Sydney, February 13. An attempt was made by a parachutist named Williams, at Ashfield (five miles west of this city) to-day, to ascend in a balloon, and'come down by means of a parachute. When he had ascended a considerable height, something went wrong with the rope which rendered him unable to free himself, and the balloon, unchecked in its career, rose to an altitude of nearly 12,000 feet. Eventually he managed to make his descent, but came down in George's River, where he was rescued. Williams states that he suffered severely from the intense cold which he passed through at a height of about 10,000 feet. As it was, he had a very narrow escape.
