COUNTRY NEWS.

[FROM OOP. OWN correspondents.] Hamilton, Saturday. It is satisfactory to have to notice the arrival of many strangers of late in the district looking for improved farms. One of these Mr. lieyner, of New South Wales has ■within the past few days become the pur. chaser of Mr. Jiuttler's farm on the HukanuiHamilton Road, near the Lake, a piece oj really good land, and picturesquely situated! Cambridge, Saturday The authorities are about to make a change in the carriage of/the mails which will certainly be a retrograde step as respects this the most important settlement in Waikato! Instead of putting on a train daily to Cambridge, as the traffic of the district full? warrants, the jigger service three times a week is to be done away with, and tenders are now called for the conveyance of th» mails the three days in the week the train does not run each way between Hautapti and Cambridge. On these days the Cambridge mail will be brought *on by the man on horseback who brings out the Hautapu mail from Hamilton, and transferred to mother mailman, who will bring them oa to Cambridge, and the morning mail will be sent to meet the Hautapu mail when it leaves for Hamilton How any manjand horse can possibly perform the service With such an addition to the weight of the mkil remains to be seen. It will also necessitate the earlier closing of the outward mad herd and cause our mail to be received considerably later in the afternoon, as instead of I the jigger proceeding from the Hamilton! West station directly after the arrival o£, the mail, as now, the mail for Cambridge will not leave Hamilton till after the mail is delivered at Hamilton, fully halt-an-hour later, and then take a much 'longer time on thfc road. The new service called for is from February Ist to the end of the year. [by TELEGRAPH. — OWN CORRESPONDENT.} | Hamilton", Saturday. A visit to the late Newstead flax mill" today, showslihat yesterday's fire was not so destructive! as reported by messenger from there last iu?ht. Both engines ami most of the machinery _ were saved, the engineer, Franklin, driving out the large traction engine at ful steam, though he was severely scorched in doing so. Not only had it fortunately happened that the dressed flax had been shipped away that morning, but the flax ready for jcutching had been removed to another buildmg. The mill itself was an old building, and pe loss is far from being so heavy as While sympathising with the proprietors, Messrs. ft. Reynolds and Captain P|tt, it is satisfactory to find that neither Captain Steele nor Mr. Reid are losers by the fire.
