WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.
♦ [BY TELEGRAPH.— OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Friday. THE IT.S'BniINT MAILS. The Government received a cablegram today to the oflect that the mails roported to have been burnt at Sydney, Nebraska, were despatched from San Francisco b}' the s.s. Alameda yesterday. According to this the Alameda was several days late in taking her departure from San Francisco, but this is probably accounted for by a delay in receiving the mails. TIIK APPLE MAGGOT. I am informed that this new post which threatens fruit-growers literally scoops out the whole "flesh" of the fruit, leaving almost nothing but the skin, and that this occurs at an early stage of the growth of the apple.
