A GIRL DROWNED.
Ykstekday Inspector Broham received information that a girl named Barbara Welch, aged 11, was accidentally drowned in the Mnngitangi river, about sixteen miles above Mercer, on Wednesday. Tho girl i 3 said to be a daughter of Mr. Francis Gregory Welch, of Onehunga, and has been living for a year past with a Mr. and Mrs. Downey. On Wednesday Mrs. Downey despatched tho girl with a message. In order to fulfil her task she had to cross the rivor or creek Mangitangi, about 300 yards from the house. It is about a chain wide, and has a rough ford, where there are stepping stones to cross at. The Late rains, it is presumed, had changed the ford, for, on tho child being missed, a search was made, and in a deep hole the petticoat worn by the girl was recovered, but the body was not found. Yesterday afternoon tho Auckland police authorities received information that the body had been found that day. The usual inquest will be held.
