WEATHER FORECASTS.
TO THE KDITOK. Sir, —It has long been a disgrace both to the Government and to the harbour authorities at. this port, Unit no steps have been taken to record the meteorological indications. Captain Edwin, 1 believe, wire? a daily report., but from some cause or other, this is not published regularly, and sometimes is not even posted up at the Post Oillce. Why can a synoptic weather chart not, be published daily, showing a section of the coast line, say, from Cape Egmoni. to the North Cape? This would be of great use to mariners. Auckland has tho largest shipping tonnage in the colony ; the bitrgeat dock in the southern hemisphere ; a prospect of becoming a naval Htatiou, the safest and best harbour, but gross niistiiniingomont are doing their best to destroy all these udvantages. If the Harbour Hoard would spend some of the money which they are now flinging away in vexatious law suits, in providing a timo ball and meteorological station, the} would appear in a much better light than they do nt present. Captain Edwin may be all very well for windy Wellington, but ho is very littlo ■ upo for Auckland. What we want is a competent! man stationed hero, to note and rocord weather changes. Could nob a portion of the spacious Harbour Board Offices, or the new Custom bo utilised for this purpose?l am, &c., Southkrn (Juoss. Auckland, September 10, 1889.
