THE C.D. ACT.

TO THIS KDITOK. Sill, —Your columns aro nob Mio place to enter into a lonjr di?custion on the merits or demerits of tho above Act, even if it were at all desirable, more particularly with a lady, who can have no experience of its working ; but I do think tho unmerited attack on the police, who havo very many unpleasant duties to perform, of which they would be only too glad to bo relieved, is worse than ungenerous and unfair, more particularly as the police are. debarred from replying to newspaper correspondents. Sophistry apart, facts spoak for themselves. During the administration of this Act the slreots and town were almost cleared of abandoned women, more particularly the younger ones; now the streets are Hooded with them, and wo have any amount of evidence, if necessary, of the increase of immorality. Our medical men and druggists can tell you of ho large increase of contagious disorders. So long as the opponents of this Act content themselves with newspaper correspondence, and doing little or nothing else for the amelioration of the unfortunates affected, so long will those who presume to differ from them consider they are actuated by a sickly sentimentality incompatible with practical Life- as wo find it. So far an the i>olice are concerned, we may be assured they are only too glad to be relieved of the unpleasant duties connected with tho administration of this Act.—l am, &c. Et Sequkntia.
