Caledonian*. opening up of No. 1 'reef at No. 1 level is being pushed forward ■an speedily as possible, and in a short time ptoping operations will be under way. The rise is" up a height of about GO feet, with the reef averaging fully 4 feet in thickness throughout, and all tho quartz obtained from this point, together with the <W/rin obtained from cleaning out tho drive, about 350 loads, has been crushed at the company's battery for the payable yield of fiDoz of retorted gold. It Is anticipated, however, that when operations are wholly 'confined to the reef a larger percentage of gold will be obtained, for in breaking the reef in a small branch working on the hillward end of the rise colours of gold are frequently seen in the quartz. The block, when opened up, will be of Large dimensions, inasmuch as the drive has already been cleaned out and repaired for a distance of nearly '200 feet, and how much further it extends is not known, whilst so far as backs are concerned, the rise proves that it is intact for a height of at least CO feet, and the ground is still solid upwards. At No. 2 level driving hillward upon Brown's reef, which is about 20 inches thick, is still being continued. The reef is encased with good sandstone country, interlaced with mineral veins, and a little gold is seen in the quartz. A trial crushing of seven loads recently gave 4oz of retorted gold. Operations have also been resumed upon tho reef between Nos. 2 and 3 levels, where it is about 18 inches thick and looking very promising. [BY TELEGRAPH. — OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Thursday.
