AUCKLAND HARBOUR BOARD.

The Auckland Harbour Board meb yesterday. Present: Messrs. M.Niccol(presiding), W. Crowbher, G. Winstone, P. Dignan, J. Savago, Captain Auderson, Messrs. C. E. Button, and J. Macfarlane.

Protection of Likb.—The Marino Department forwarded for the information of the Board the rider to the verdict of the jury in the inquest upon the body of John Franklin, who was drowned by falling from the gangway* of the barque* Largo Bay. Tho rider was to the effect that the- harbour regulations ehould be amended so a* bo compel masters of vessels to place ropes on either nide of the gangways with nettino , underneath. The letter was referred to tlie harbourmaster.

WiiAßir at Takafuna. — Mr. C. S. 8. Georpe wrote stating that tho engineer of tho Waitemata County Council had reported that a jetty could be placed from r point at the reef extending 100 feet, and this would provide 6 feet of water at low tide, which would bo sufficient for the berthing of a steamer. He requested that the Board would consider this proposal. The Chairman said that the cost of the work would be bctweon £250 And £300. He thought that the Board should contribute one-third of tho cost, nob exceeding £100. The subject was referred to tlve Works and Tariff Committoe.

Takinq ov Shells.—Mr. A. Bucklnnd wrote complaining that masters of cutters were causing a good deal of damage by taking shells ab the Tamaki Beach. The Chairman euid it wae necessary that there should be a place where bid last could be token from. It was decided to caution tho masters and owners of the cutlers that the ottence must not be repented, and to instruct the Havbourmaster to appoint a place from which ballast can bo removed.

Thii Callioi-k Dock Disfuyb.—Messrs. Russell and Campboll reported that at a first meeting aftor tii* appointment of Mr. Knox os arbitrator, Mr. Coleman (solicitor for Mr. Knox) had raised the question of the latter gentleman's remuneration, and it had been agreed that he should put his views in writing. A letter from Mr. Coleman was read, in which ho st-atod that it was desired that the question of Mr. Knox'e remuneration should be placed on a more satisfactory basis, and ho askod that an agreement to pay the arbitrator his reasonable charges should be jointly and severally enter into between the Harbour Board and Mr. Lunigan. The Chairman considered ib would be fairer if each party were to agree to pay half tho costs, and on his motion it was resolved, " That, tho Hoard agree to pay one-half of Mr. Knox'a reasonable costs as arbitrator, provided Mr. Lanignn agrees to pay tho other half." Railway Bkiook.-A telegram from the Public Works Department, in roply to one sent by the chairman of tho Board, stated that the erection of the bridge to Wynyard Pier, over the railway, would bo proceeded with immediately. Works and Tariff Committkk.—This committee recommended :—(1) That the Purnel! Borough Council be informed that this Board is prepared to consider any definite propositions ro Manuknu Road ; ('2) that this Board agrees to reserve a roadway from St. BnrtittbaV Point to St. George's Buy so eoon as all water rights are extinguished, cost of making and maintaining the road to bo borne by the Parnell Borough Council, and all rights of water frontage outride of roadway to belong to this Board ; (3) that, tho consideration of Mr. Darling's lotter re machinery, etc., for Calliope Dock bo deferred until next meeting of this committee; (4) that Dredger No. 121 be taken under the 10-ton crane, and buckets lifted, and that the bop-sides of the vessel be chipped and painted by the engineer in charge ; (5) that tho necessary expenditure for fixing eollarcls for timber .slidcd at Calliope Dix;k be authorised ; (G) that ring bolts be provided at Calliope Dock at a coat of, say £10; (7) that the consideration as* to repairs to breastwork in Quay street be deferred ; (8) thnfc tenders be called for rubble slope in front of breastwork under Queen-street Wharf, returnable on Tuesday next. Tho report was adopted.

The Board and its Tkxawts.—The Finance and Committee recommended —That un Order-in-Council be obtained declaring this Board to be subject to tho powers contained in sections 1, '2, 3,4,7, s, 9, 11 of the Public Bodio-s' Powera Act, ISB7- The Chairman said the clause giving power to reduce the rentals of present tenauta wiv-» not now included in those recommended by the Committee, but the Board would bo empowered, if tho suggestions were adopted, to do away with the increasing clause nt the end of 21 years, ;ind give a valuation. The recoinmendntionf wero adopted. Saujsman at FiHiiMAKKKT.—The Works and Tariff Committee recommended tho following poreons, of those who hud applied for the position of salesman nt the Ifishinarket, an, in their opiaion, most suitable for the post:—Messrs. W. C. Stead, K. McDonald, Captain W. R-uthe, Messr.-*. W. Spnrgo, J. Leydon, and S. Fullerbon. A b;tllot by the members of bhu Bo;ird resulted iu favour of Captain Rubhe, who waa therefore declared elected.

Ofkek to Lkask. —In regard to Mr. M:iys' offer to loose certain land at Takapuiift, it won decided, on the recommendation of tho Finance and Lejfal Committee, to ask him for further information on the subject.

Lajuung Powdkk,—Tho Harbourmaster reported that 110 barrels of Government gunpowder and ton ca«o.s of fireworks had Boon landed iit tbe Queen-street Wharf from tho .ship Piako. Tho chairman remarked that it was an anomaly that, when powder happened to be tho property of the Government, the ship having it on bo;inl wae allowed to come up to the wharf and luncl it. Jt whs resolved that the attention of the Government should bo drawn to the matter.

Tbndkus run Works.— following tenders were received for the reclamation and excavation of Freeman's Bay :—John Choyne and Co., £1898 ; Garden and Brett, £2550 ; J. T. Julyan, £2797 ; Cmngford and Hughes, £lf>94 15s; Mulvihill and Co., £2377 12.3 -kl ; (i. Knight, £212(3 18s !)d ; Lovett and White, £2000; Rowan, Rowan, and Shea, £248") 13s. The engineer's estimate was £2350. The tender of Langford and Hughes was accepted. Tenders for tlie placing of a rubble apron at the approach to Queen-street Wharf wero receeived as follow :—Lovett and White, £85 Us 7d ; J. T. Julyan, £99 15s 3d ; Melville and McOrath, £7."> 83 5d ; J. Cheyno and Co., £85 Os 3d. The estimate of the engineer wag £75. Melville and McGrath's tender was accepted.
