THE BROKEN CABLE.
[BY TELKGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wklmngton, Thursday. The cable-repairing steamer Sherard Osborno arrived here at 2.30 this afternoon. The officers are very reticent; as to tho injury to the cable, and the electrician, in reply to inquiries, said, "I know nothing about the cable." It appears, however, that the sole reason for the steamer coming on here is want of coal, which was not obtainable at Nelson. It was gathered on board that last week the cable was cut about 250 miles from Cable Bay, in order to ascertain the position of a fault, and both ends of the cable were buoyed. Bad weather then came on, and rendered it impossible for the steamer to work. Tho steamer returns to-morrow night, and as it will take her a couple of days to reach the scene of the break, and the work of restoration is expected to occupy about twelve hours, it will be Monday or Tuesday before communication is complete.
